Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo |
General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1808-1890) was the Mexican commandant of northern California and owned several large ranchos, or land grants. Among these was the Rancho Suscol, which included the site of the present-day City of Vallejo. After California was admitted to the Union in 1850, General Vallejo donated 156 acres of his land for the establishment of a new state capitol. This new state capitol was named Vallejo in his honor.
