Pictured: Industrialist Andrew Carnegie offered a grant of $20,000 on December 27th, 1902 to erect a new public library in Vallejo, which was then built and dedicated in 1904. Located on the northwest corner of Virginia and Sacramento streets, the building stood until 1969 when it was demolished as part of an urban renewal project.

Vallejo's first woman doctor was Rachel Brown Lain, M.D., who practiced medicine in Vallejo from 1891 until her death in 1918. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1863. She maintained hospital beds in her home at the southwest corner of Marin and Carolina streets. Dr. Lain also owned the first automobile seen in Vallejo, a 1904 Maxwell.
